The capstan can be designed with a vertical axle or horizontal axle, namely, vertical capstan or horizontal capstan.

Horizontal capstan: The horizontal capstan have two power type: electric motor and hydraulic motor. A horizontal capstan is installed above the deck, so the installation is straightforward and maintenance is easy. On the other hand, this means the motor is more exposed to the weather conditions. The horizontal capstan is ideal for the horizontal handling of chain-only anchor rods and ropes. It is mounted completely above the deck.

Vertical capstan: The vertical capstan can be driven by electric motor or hydraulic motor. The capstan head is generally situated above the deck the motor and gearbox are situated below the deck, thus the installation and maintenance are more difficult. But it occupies less deck area and is beneficial for protecting motors and gearboxes.

The selection of a vertical or horizontal capstan winch is largely determined by your specific uses, deck thickness and under-deck space.
