What Is Flange

What Is Flange

Flange is a kind of parts used for the connection of pipeline and equipment, usually consists of two flanges, gaskets and bolts and nuts, which are tightened by bolts to realize the sealing connection of pipeline. Flanges are widely used in chemical industry, construction, water supply, petroleum, light and heavy industry, refrigeration, sanitation, plumbing, fire fighting, electric power, aerospace, shipbuilding and other basic engineering.

Overview

Why use flanges

Flanges are a widely used connecting part in industrial piping systems, mainly used to connect valves and pumps for the control and transmission of fluids or gases. Meanwhile, flanges can not only be used for connection, but also as a connecting part for supporting and fixing various equipment or machines, providing a stable and reliable structural connection.

Classification of flanges

Classification by connection method

Threaded flanges: connected by threads, suitable for occasions where welding is not required, easy to install. Welding flanges: including butt-welding flanges and flat welding flanges with necks, suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature environments, with good sealing performance. Socket weld flange: one end is welded to the steel pipe and the other end is bolted, commonly used for pipelines with lower pressure. Loose set flanges: including butt-welding ring loose set flanges and flat welding ring loose set flanges, used to save materials or facilitate construction, but withstand lower pressure.

Classification by material

Carbon steel: usually used for low-pressure pipelines, cost-effective and suitable for general working conditions. Alloy steel: with higher strength and corrosion resistance is suitable for electric power, aerospace, military, high-speed rail, ships and other fields. Stainless steel: such as 304, 316, with excellent corrosion resistance and aesthetics, suitable for chemical, food, pharmaceutical and other industries that require high hygiene standards.

Classified by sealing surface form

Planar flange: the surface of the flange is completely flat, suitable for occasions where the pressure is not high and the medium is non-toxic. Surface flange: the most common form of sealing surface, simple structure, easy processing, suitable for medium pressure pipeline. Concave-convex face flange: consists of a concave face and a convex face, the gasket is placed on the concave face, suitable for pipelines with higher pressure. Tongue and groove face flanges: consisting of a tongue and groove face, suitable for high pressure, high temperature and toxic media environment. Ring joint face flanges: gaskets are placed in ring grooves for extreme high pressure and high temperature environments.
