Marine navigation light vs. Marine signal light
Marine navigation illumination system consists of two parts: navigation light and signal lights. There are some differences between them.
Overview
Marine navigation lights are applied to indicate the heading and size of the ship, including starboard lights, port lights, masthead lights, stern lights and anchor lights.
Requirements of installation as follows:
Starboard light: green, 112.5° (horizontal angle) , visibility is 3n mile.
Port light: red, 112.5°, visibility is 3n mile.
Masthead light: white, 225°, visibility is 6n mile.
Stern light: white, 135°, visibility is 3n mile.
Anchor light: white, 360°, visibility is 3n mile.
Signal lights are all-round illumination. They are installed on either side of radar mast or on a independent mast for signal light. They transmit operation condition of the ship through different colors of light source. The common signal light illuminant colors include white, red and green. Some signal lights are special, they can send signal or message through flashing with a regular frequency, such as Morse signal light; some are applied in special water area such as Panama canal and Suez canal; the others can be used to steer or warn, such as steering light and warning signal light.
