Marine Anchor Windlass

Marine Anchor Windlass

A marine anchor windlass is a mechanical device used on boats and ships to raise and lower the anchor. The marine anchor windlass on the ship is mainly electric windlass, hydraulic windlass and diesel engine windlass. The windlass system is mainly composed of a base, support, anchor chain wheel, brake, gearbox, electronic control system, etc. The electric windlass for boats has an electric motor, and the hydraulic windlass has a hydraulic pump station. The diesel engine windlass is powered by a diesel engine.

Overview

The anchor windlass consists of a gypsy, which is a rotating wheel with grooves that engage the links of the chain or the strands of the rope. The gypsy/wildcat allowing it to rotate and pull in or let out the anchor chain or rope. (The anchor windlass is operated by a control switch or lever, usually located near the helm or on the deck. When the switch is activated, the motor powers the drum and the gypsy/wildcat, allowing the anchor to be raised or lowered.)

Marine anchor windlasses come in various sizes and configurations to accommodate different types and sizes of vessels. They are an essential component of a boat's anchoring system, providing a reliable and efficient way to handle the anchor and anchor ride.

Marine anchor windlasses are usually used with the anchor chain wheel/gypsy/sprocket for lifting anchors. If the marine anchor windlasses is equipped with the drum or warping head, it can be used with mooring ropes/steel wire rope/cables for mooring.
