Marine Winch
A marine winch is a mechanical device used on boats and ships to handle heavy loads and perform various tasks. It consists of a drum or spool that is used to wind and unwind a cable or rope, and a motor or manual crank that provides the power to operate the winch.
Overview
The marine winch will consist of a powered drive (with a motor) connected through a gearbox to a drive shaft. The drive shaft might have a warping drum connected to it. There might be one or more drums connected to the drive shaft by clutches. The drum will have a primary brake to secure the mooring line when the ship is moored. Winch drums are usually split into a tension section and a storage section. The operator will control the speed and direction of the winch using controls (push buttons or levers) and might clutch the drums in or out (usually using a lever) from the drive system.
Marine winch drives can service more than one drum through a clutch arrangement on the drive shaft. This may reduce the number of winch drives required. Winch drums may also share a drive with a warping drum or an anchor windlass. A single winch drive servicing two drums is common, but having a single winch drive servicing three or more drums should be carefully considered. If a single drive servicing three or more drums fails it can have a serious effect on overall mooring capability.

Marine winches are usually used with steel wire ropes/cables/mooring ropes for mooring. If the marine winches is equipped with the anchor chain wheel/gypsy/sprocket, it can be used with the anchor chain for lifting anchors.
