Sounding Tube
In order to check the filling and draining of liquid in the tanks and the amount of bilge water, sounding pipes are installed in each ballast tank, fuel tank, isolation empty tank, water tank and other hard-to-reach subdivisions. Sounding tube is generally galvanized steel pipe, diameter 30~50mm. The sounding tube must run straight to the lowest part of the tank or, if the bilge is flat, at both ends.
Overview
Location of the sounding tube
With the exception of the short sounding tube, the upper end of the sounding tube should generally be extended to a readily accessible point on the deck to prevent outboard water from spreading through the sounding tube to other compartments in the event of damage to one compartment. The upper end of the tube is provided with a threaded cover, in order not to interfere with walking, the cover should be flush with the deck. The sounding tube of the fuel oil tank must be open to the open deck to prevent oil and gas from spreading to other compartments and to ensure fire safety.
