When a ship discharges oily water or domestic sewage in waters under the jurisdiction of a particular country, in accordance with the wider requirements that may be imposed by that country, a piece of equipment is required - the marine international connection to the shore.

When ships are traveling to ports and offshore loading docks, the international shore connection is able to meet the needs of arriving ships for domestic wastewater receiving equipment without undue delay to the ship.
