Installation process of stern tube

The tube through which the tail shaft or propeller shaft passes out of the hull is called the stern tube. The stern tube refers to a sleeve type shaft section located at the stern of a ship, which is used to enclose the propeller shaft and provide it with access to the outside of the hull. The stern tube of a single propeller ship is connected to the front end of the shaft hub on the propeller column and welded to it; The stern tube of a double (multi) propeller ship is connected to the hull on both sides of the stern and welded or wrapped in a shaft sleeve with the outer shell plate and shaft support. The front and rear ends of the tail shaft tube must be filled with packing to ensure its water tightness.

Overview

The tube through which the tail shaft or propeller shaft passes out of the hull is called the stern tube. The stern tube refers to a sleeve type shaft section located at the stern of a ship, which is used to enclose the propeller shaft and provide it with access to the outside of the hull.

Installation process for stern tube of large and medium-sized ships:

(1) Send the stern tube into the aft bulkhead hole and stern column shaft hole, which can be pulled by a lifting hoist or transported by a small car. When the stern tube starts to contact the diameter fitting surface, additional force is required to press it in.

(2) When the thread of the stern tube extends 3-4 teeth beyond the rear end of the hub hole, the corresponding position on the rear end face of the stern tube hub should be drilled, threaded, and the stern tube nut stop block should be installed. The nut should be tightened at the flange end of the stern tube and tightened.

Installation process of stern tube for small and medium-sized ships:

In order to avoid collisions with holes on board, small and medium-sized ships widely use epoxy resin casting method for construction. Bore the holes for the stern shaft hub and herringbone frame in the workshop, which have a large clearance with the outer circle of the stern shaft tube. First, weld the stern shaft hub and herringbone frame to the hull. During welding, the herringbone frame can be supported by adjusting screws, and its position can be calibrated according to the theoretical centerline of the shaft system. After welding the stern shaft hub, insert the stern shaft tube. After installing the stern shaft tube, temporarily support it with adjusting screws, and then align its position according to the theoretical centerline of the shaft system. Then, fill the clearance between the stern shaft, stern shaft hub, and the herringbone frame with epoxy resin binding agent to tighten the stern shaft tube.
