Components of Impressed Current Cathodic Protection System

Impressed current cathodic protection System (ICCP) is composed of potentiometer (control cabinet), auxiliary anode and anode shielding layer, reference electrode and other devices. The function of this device is to protect the underwater part of the hull from seawater corrosion.

Overview

Main Component Parts

Constant Potentiometer(Control Cabinet)

Constant Potentiometer is to adjust the protection current to achieve the protection of the hull from corrosion, input 440V/60Hz, output 100A/16V, through the constant positioner to apply the current, forcing the anodic area of the hull to become cathodic area, so as to protect the hull from corrosion.

With the increase of current, the electrons gather on the surface of cathode, resulting in the potential in negative polarisation, when the negative potential reaches a certain level, the hull reaches equipotential, making the hull become cathode and the corrosion stops naturally.

Auxiliary Anode

The auxiliary anode is connected to the positive pole of the power supply and the protective current is applied to the steel plate through seawater.

Anode Shied Layer

The anode shielding layer coating is generally painted around the auxiliary anode. When power is fed into the ICCP system, a large amount of current flows out of the auxiliary anode and is evenly distributed on the hull. The shielding layer coating has good insulating properties and is resistant to alkali and seawater, and epoxy resin is generally used.

Reference Electrode

Reference electrode In ICCP system, the reference anode serves as a reference for the potential measurement of the protected object and provides a comparison signal between the protection potential and the measured potential to the constant potential meter, so that the protected potential remains unchanged.

The reference electrode is a non-polar electrode with stable performance, accuracy and sensitivity.
