C40 Sounding Pipe Head
Overview
Details of the layout of the sounding tube
The sounding pipe is usually straight, but the bilge curvature of many small boats is large, and the sounding pipe must be extended as far as possible to the bilge, so the sounding pipe has to be bent.
If bending is necessary, the radius of curvature should be as small as possible so that the sounder can pass easily. In the case of cargo ships, curved sounding tubes passing through other compartments shall be given special consideration by the classification society. This arrangement is usually only feasible if the passing chamber is empty in isolation or holds the same liquid as the chamber of the sounding tube. The curved part of the sounding pipe should be thickened and properly supported. However, classification society regulations do not require much tilt Angle, and some shipyards' process manuals mention no more than 15° for reference only.
