What is the start-up mode of a marine diesel generator

There are two modes of starting diesel generator sets: electric starting and air starting.

Overview

The starting methods for marine generator sets usually include electric starting and air starting, and the specific selection depends on the design and requirements of the ship:

1. Electric starting:

Principle: Electric starting is the process of starting the engine of a generator set driven by an electric motor. The electric motor drives the crankshaft of the engine to rotate through the electrical energy provided by the power supply, thereby starting the engine to run.

Advantages: The electric starting operation is simple, the starting speed is fast, and there is no need for external compressed air system support.

Applicability: Suitable for ships with good power systems and power supply, with low requirements for power resources.

2. Air starting:

Principle: Air starting is the process of starting the engine of a generator set by compressing air. Generally, high-pressure air is sent into the engine cylinder through a compressed air system to push the crankshaft to start the engine.

Advantages: Air starting does not require power system support, is independent of the ship's power system, and has a certain degree of autonomy.

Applicability: Suitable for situations where the ship's power system is unstable or unable to provide sufficient power, while requiring the air compression system to be reliable and able to provide sufficient starting pressure.

In ship design, the selection of electric or air starting methods will take into account factors such as the power system of the ship, the characteristics of the generator set, and the reliability and cost of the starting system.
