Overview

General requirements

1.1 Lifebuoys complying with LSA requirements should be:

(1) Positioned on both sides of the ship where they are easily accessible, and within reasonable reach, distributed on all exposed decks extending to the ship's sides; at least one should be placed near the stern.

(2) Their storage should allow for quick removal at any time and should not be permanently secured in any way.

1.2 Each side of the ship should have at least one lifebuoy equipped with a compliant buoyant lifeline, with a length not less than twice the height above the lightest seagoing waterline where it is stored, or 30 meters, whichever is greater.

1.3 At least half of the lifebuoys should be equipped with compliant self-igniting lights; among these, at least two should also have compliant self-activating smoke signals that can be quickly thrown from the bridge; lifebuoys with self-igniting lights and those with self-igniting lights and self-activating smoke signals should be evenly distributed on both sides of the ship, and these lifebuoys should not be the ones equipped with buoyant lifelines as required in 1.2.

1.4 Each lifebuoy should be marked with the ship's name and port of registry in bold uppercase Roman letters to indicate its belonging to the ship.
