Requirement for Self Closing Cock on the Ship

According to the requirements of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, the fuel measuring pipe that ends at the machinery space should be equipped with a self-closing shut-off device at the end of the measuring pipe (the self-closing shut-off device generally has two forms: one is a self-closing weight and the other is a self-closing spring). A small-diameter self-closing control cock should also be installed below the self-closing shut-off device to determine whether there is fuel in the measuring pipe before the shut-off device is opened.

During the daily ship safety inspection, it was found that the common defects of the self-closing control cock of the measuring pipe required by the convention are mainly two types:

The first type is that the measuring pipe is not equipped with a self-closing cock. When it is necessary to measure the oil level in the oil tank, the crew often directly opens the self-closing weight or self-closing spring to measure with an oil dipstick;

The second type is that the self-closing cock is stuck and cannot be closed or is missing. This situation is often because the crew does not understand the design and the function of the cock. Therefore, the self-closing control cock is lacking in daily work. Maintenance, even if the device is missing, does not attract attention.

In either case, if the oil tank is full, the crew cannot foresee that the tank is full when measuring the oil tank, and directly open the shut-off device of the measuring pipe, and the fuel will spray out. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the management of the self-closing control cock of the measuring pipe of the engine room fuel tank (cabinet).
