Marine Ballast Pump

Marine Ballast Pump

Ballast pump is a device used to fill or drain ballast water tanks, usually also known as ballast pumps. The main function is to realize the injection and discharge of ballast water through the pump and the transfer between the tanks. Ballast pumps are usually installed on the bottom of the ship, with a certain liquid column height, so there is no need for self-priming capacity, and high specific revolution centrifugal pumps or reciprocating pumps are often used.

Overview

Working process

The ballast pump mainly includes two processes of suction and drainage.

Suction process: The vacuum degree is established in the pump, and the liquid is sucked into the pump chamber by the atmospheric pressure difference inside and outside the pump.

Drain process: Pressure is applied to the liquid through the moving parts of the pump to push it out of the pump chamber.

The suction height of the pump is generally between 6 and 7 meters, and the specific value will be affected by the vacuum degree and the flow resistance loss in the suction pipe.

Application scenario

Ballast pump is used on the ship for the injection or drainage of ballast water tank, ballast pump by controlling the injection and discharge of ballast water, to help the ship maintain balance and stability during navigation.
