Commonly used Dock Bollard Material

Commonly used Dock Bollard Material

Dock bollards are critical components in marine infrastructure, used for securing vessels to docks, piers, and wharves. The materials used for dock bollards are chosen for their strength, durability, and resistance to harsh marine environments.

Overview

Dock bollards are usually made of cast steel, cast iron, ductile iron materials :

Cast Iron:

High strength and durability. (lower than ductile iron)

Excellent wear resistance.

Economical and widely available.

Resistant to corrosion when properly treated or coated.

Ductile Iron:

Similar to cast iron but with added ductility and toughness.

Better impact and fatigue resistance than cast iron.

Combines the strength of cast iron with improved flexibility and durability.

Less brittle than cast iron, reducing the risk of cracking under high loads.

The most expensive of the three materials

Cast Steel:

Very high strength and load-bearing capacity.

Low cost per unit weight.

Requires regular maintenance to prevent corrosion.
